Records Smashed at Paralympic Games

INTERNATIONAL: A whole host of world records fell at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo on Monday. Swimming and powerlifting were the stand-out events.

In the pool, China's Ma Jia smashed the world record in the final of the Women's 200m Individual Medley SM11 category, just ahead of her teammate Cai Liwen. Italy's Carlotta Gilli also set a new world record in the Women's 200m Medley SM13 final, swimming far clear of the field to leave her rivals with no chance at all. More records went under in the Men's Freestyle 4x100 Relay, with Australia's Ben Popham winning an impressive final stretch to win gold for his team.

The powerlifters also produced two outstanding performances. Mongolia's Sodnompiljee Enkh-bayar lifted a massive world record of 245 kilos, to win gold in the men's 107 kilo final. Nigeria's Folashade Oluwa-femiayo also showed her strength with a new world record of 151 kilos to win gold in the women's 86kg final. The 2020 Paralympic Games end on Sunday.
